often the biggest hurdle is reaching out

hello and welcome

I’m Richard, the lead therapist and managing partner here at rb therapy & wellbeing.

I am a therapist with over 15 years’ experience working across a range of settings including NHS, prisons, police, local authority, voluntary sector & private practice.

Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked for many years in IT & Data for a major international banking group which afforded me first-hand experience of organisational culture and exposure to the complexities of workplace stress and relationships.
This combined background, together with my extensive work in private practice has enabled me to work successfully with clients experiencing the broadest range of issues, from individuals dealing with anxiety, loss, relationship issues, trauma, addiction and abuse, through to helping employees and organisations achieve balance and find a collective way forward.
In addition to my private work, I am privileged to be able to work for part of my time with two amazing organisations, offering counselling & support to individuals who have suffered abuse, trauma and exploitation, and helping them to come to terms with events and to be able to find their path forward.
I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and both myself & the wider team operate wholly within the BACP’s ethical framework. This includes ongoing commitments to CPD (continuing professional development) and regular counselling supervision.
I maintain full indemnity insurance and hold a current enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) Certificate

for individuals

One-to-one therapy: The opportunity to meet with a fully qualified counsellor on a regular basis (usually weekly) to work with you in helping you to explore whatever difficulties or challenges you may be facing.

Online/telephone counselling: For those individuals unable to make appointments in person we also offer online facilities (please note that online work operates under UK legislation and ethical frameworks, regardless of your location at the time of the sessions).

EMDR: (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) is a particular type of therapeutic intervention that was originally designed to help alleviate the stress and symptoms from traumatic events. Its significant success rates in the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has led to further research and application to a much broader range of issues including phobias, addiction, anxiety, allergies and pain management.

for organisations

Corporate solutions: Employees are the core asset of any organisation and now, more than ever, the emphasis is on ensuring that business has a focus on wellbeing in ensuring that team members are valued, feel supported and energised into achieving the shared core aims. Traditional EAP solutions may offer a broad one-size-fits-all package that whilst being fiscally beneficial, may often lack the flexibility of individual requirements.
At rbtherapy, we recognise that you came into the marketplace with a unique offering and similarly your organisational culture will be set apart from others, therefore requiring a tailored package. Whether it be active dedicated therapeutic support for individuals, drop-in services, conflict resolution etc then contact us to discuss your requirements.

what is therapy and how can it help?

Therapy offers people a confidential one-to-one relationship with a professional counsellor/psychotherapist through which you have the opportunity to explore the difficulties that you’re encountering.
Our daily lives are often filled with many challenges, most of which we can overcome ourselves or with the support of those around us, but when we begin to struggle and the road ahead is unclear then this is often when therapy is beneficial, in being able to talk to someone who is able to empathise and support us through the journey without judgement.
Often the biggest hurdle is reaching out. Taking that first step in saying to someone “I need some help” is actually one of the bravest things anyone can do, and both myself & my fellow practitioners will always recognise that massive step that a person takes in either picking up the phone or sending an email.
I was once that person and so I appreciate the time, the courage, the digging deep, that sometimes it takes to make that initial contact.
Please either call me, email or use the contact form on this page for an entirely free of charge initial chat & consultation and we can look at how I can help. Even if together we decide that our services are not right for you, with my extensive knowledge of wider organisations/contacts then I will do my upmost to connect you with the most appropriate people.
Although women & men experience many similar issues throughout their lives, men historically have found it more challenging to come forward for help and talk about what they’re going through. Many aspects of society still promote the image that “men don’t cry” whilst at the same time men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women. As a man who has previously needed to reach out, I know how daunting it can be, but when the time is right for you, then please call and we will talk through how I can help.
Mojácar

spain

Late 2021 will see a whole new chapter commence for rbtherapy as we open the doors of our brand new practice in Spain. Whilst we will always continue to provide our online therapy services for UK clients, unfortunately the move will mean the closure of our longstanding Barnsley therapy room for in-person counselling.

In Spain, we are currently in the process of securing new premises in the Mojácar/Garrucha/Vera region (Costa de Almería) for face-to-face work but again, will be able to offer online therapy to english-speaking residents across the whole of Spain.

Update relating to the Coronavirus

The safety and wellbeing of our clients is always our upmost priority and the Coronavirus pandemic has brought with it a host of challenges for both therapists and clients alike in making sure that individuals get the support that they need during these difficult times. We are fortunate that our main therapy room in Barnsley is large enough to allow for social distancing and so in accordance with current UK guidelines we have re-opened the practice for face-to-face appointments though the number of available appointments has reduced in order to facilitate appropriate cleaning of the space between each time slot. We have continued to work online throughout the pandemic & the ever-growing medium and success of online therapy is one that we will continue to offer going forwards. Should you have any questions about the safe delivery of our services then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
